Why won’t San Diego Unified School District pay for the buses?
Under California law, transportation is not considered fundamental to the learning process; therefore, school districts are not obligated to provide for it. Despite our taxes, SDUSD does not allocate funding for transportation of students to neighborhood schools or help subsidize the cost of a bus program.
What will a parent-paid bus program provide my family? The service will lower the amount of traffic on the roads during the morning and afternoon commute. It will also provide safe transport to and from school as well as reduce your travel time and save gas. It will also help reduce fossil fuel emissions and reduce global warming, lowering your carbon footprint and making the world a nicer place for your kids to live in in the future.
Can I receive a discount if I have more than 1 student riding the bus? Yes. See registration form for current year pricing.
When is the money due? Payment is due in September/October after your bus status has been confirmed. You will receive an invoice from the SDUSD Transportation Department.
How much does it cost? See Registration form for current year pricing.
Can I register for partial service? No. Your fee is for round trip, however you can choose to use the bus as much or little as you need. The fee is the same.
Can I receive a refund if my student leaves during the school year? Yes, prorated refunds are provided.
Can I register for the bus service after the enrollment period? Yes. Your student will be added to a bus stop or waiting list depending upon availability.
How were the locations chosen? Locations were selected based on safety, traffic concerns, parent and student convenience and concentration of student population.
Who will provide supervision at the bus locations? Off-campus locations are not supervised. School administrators will investigate and discipline student behavior pursuant to school district policies.
Are there plans for a Shores bus stop? No. There is not enough concentration of student population and interest in the Shores, so we have no plans for the Shores as of April 2016.
A friend of our child who rides the bus tells us that there are several empty spots on the bus every morning and afternoon, however our child is still on the waitlist. Why is this? Not every student rides the bus every day, so there will be empty spots on the bus. The district conducts regular checks to see if students are riding the bus regularly, and we will contact you as soon as spots become available.
Will priority for 2016-2017 be given to returning riders? Yes. See the registration page for details.
